Checked out Dan Savage a couple of weekends ago at the Vogue Theatre.
Structured in a Q & A format, it was a no-holds-barred evening with Dan answering audience questions on topics from the serious to the bizarre to the downright obscene.
Before entering the show we were handed a pamphlet and a bag of glitter encouraging us to “glitter bomb” Savage due to some of his controversial remarks surrounding women, trans people and other groups. When asked about these remarks and glitter-bombing during the show, Dan responded (speaking specifically to the trans community), “When I become your enemy, we’ve really lost the fight.” I found this to be a pretty powerful response. Although I don’t agree with everything he has to say or all of his tactics, there still remain so many barriers to the LGBT community receiving true respect and acceptance in society and it’s awesome that Dan, as an advocate, has become such a revered public commentator. But thanks for the glitter. It’ll add some awesome sparkle to my scrapbook.
It was an great evening – chock full of insults towards Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and other high profile Republicans. And of course, hilarious yet practical advice for any relationship – no matter what your sexual orientation.
He finished the evening with a fond farewell. “I love you, Vancouver…and Canada. Thanks for the marriage license.”
